BITTERSHARP Cider Apples.
Malus FOXWHELP.
A very old variety, mentioned back in 1644, but I believe it's origins (from Gloucestershire or Hertfordshire in the UK) are even earlier. The flesh tends to be coarse, but is yellow and juicy, with skin a light yellow with pale red stripes on the side of the sun, Highly valued due to it's high acid, high tannin juice.
Malus K INGSTON BLACK.
The fruit is small to medium in size, with dark crimson or dark mahogany colour, and a deliciously looking dark tawny juice.Has a good sugar content in good seasons, giving excellent quality, full body, and a distinctive flavour.
Malus MELBA.
A very useful apple , to cook quickly for compotes and apple suace, used in cider due to it's juicy flesh, covered with a skin coloured red with yellow streaks.
Ma lus QUINTE.
This apple is from a cross between Red Melba and Crimson Beauty, in 1964 from Ontario, having a yellow background with a bright red flush and cream coloured flesh. A moderate sized fruit and quite hardy.
Malus STOKE RED.
With a good aroma and fruity flavour, coupled with a high average of sugar content, the fruit tends to be a flat and round, with a skin that appears to have a slightly, yet dry waxy, dry skin, dark red with what looks like stripes, and a pinkish/red juicy flesh, makes a good vintage quality.
The above are some of the Bittersharp flavoured cider apples, further additions will be made at a later date, but please remember that the other types of crab apple may be to your "TASTE", so have a look at-: Sharp, Bittersweet, or Sweet.
