APPLE TREES DESSERT. T-W
Malus TUMANGA (Auralia).
An apple from the cross of cox's orange and Schoener von Nordhausen from Erwin Baur Institute, Germany 1930, that is a good grower and regular bearer of fruit. Producing an apple that is larger than a Cox (although similar in appearance) with light yellow skin, with an orange blush, having a crisp, spicy yet juicy and pleasantly aromatic sweet flesh. The flavour will improve if kept until March.
Malus WAGENER.
Mr Wheeler planted seedling apples in an orchard inPenn Yan, New York, and then sold the orchard to Abraham Wagener in 1796. One of the original plantings was subsequently called Wagener, that became a popular variety in the south. An excellent all-rouder for use as cider, cooking and as a dessert apple. A medium to large sized fruit with a thin smooth, pale yellow skin covered with a glossy pink/red. With a sweet/tart, spright, yet aromatic flesh. A tree that tends to bear heavy crops.
Malus WEALTHY.
A variety first bred in America in an attempt to growing it in the north. Developed from a seed source of Cherry Crab, by Peter Gideon of Excelsior Minnesota, in the 1860s, he named it for his wife, the former Wealthy Hull. It is both a hardy and adaptable tree and ideal for colder regions. Having a bright red skin, with white flesh tinged with red which is not only crisp, aromatic and tender, but also juicy.
Malus WILLI AMS.
Originally named Williams, but was later, called Williams Favourite, the apple originated by Captain Benjamin Williams at Roxbury, Massachusetts, around 1750. Produces a medium to large, conical fruit that maybe lobed or angular, with a whitish-yellow skin with 2 shades of red and striped, with tender juicy flesh with a mild sub acid taste and stained red at the core.
Malus WINESAP.
Although little is known of the origins of this apple, it dates from around the late 1700s. Whilst it is a small apple with a tough smooth skin of rich deep red, the flesh is tinged with yellow, and a tart , tangy, sprightly sub acid flavour it is juicy and extra firm.
Malus WINTER BANANA.
Originating from Indiana in 1876, this large apple has a smooth,pale yellow skin with a red blush, that tends to be thick and on the tough side, but is made up for in the flesh which has a yellow tinge, mildly sub acid, distinctly aromatic, but tender and juicy.
